Brings May Flowers EQ8 Tutorial

I've been sharing a fun EQ project - April Showers Brings May flowers.  This week we will finish up the quilt.

Over the last two weeks, I shared drafting umbrella blocks along with raindrop blocks (for the April Showers) part of the design.

In this tutorial, I have a bonus project focused just on the May Flowers block option.

April Showers EQ8 Tutorial

Growing up, I remember Mom singing a song called April Showers.  It included these lyrics:

"When April Showers come your way.
They bring the flowers that bloom in May.
So if it is raining, have no regret.
It isn't raining rain you know.
It's raining violets."

She must have sung it a lot -- as I was able to recall and write out the words without a Google search.

In Minnesota we started the month with some snow.  After an entire ...

Easter Egg PosieMaker from On Point Quilter

I promise -- this is the last egg-stranza post for the year.  I have been a bit fixated on egg quilts.  In case you missed it, you may want to check out the posts for the last two weeks:
  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Foundation Pieced Applique Easter Egg

The new one I will be sharing with you today is a circular design.  Depending on the size you could turn it into a table topper for a round circular table.  Or for those that are into working with wool and embroidery -- a candle mat.

Foundation Pieced Applique Easter Eggs from On Point Quilter

Continuing on with an egg-travaganza theme, I will be sharing a new way to add foundation piecing to your applique shapes.  The only applique "drawing" in this tutorial is deleting a few patches from a block in the library and rotating the ending shape.

Super simple.

Foundation Pieced Applique Easter Eggs Tutorial

When I was working on the Easter Egg Hunt post, I found all these decorative eggs in the EQ8 Library.  They are all under 05-Contemporary Applique>Holiday -Easter.  While I loved the blocks, I wanted something simpler to work with.

So I deleted all the elements other than ...

Not Your Traditional Irish Chain Quilt from On Point Quilter

Do you have a quilt that got you interested in quilt making?

Here is mine. My grandmother made an Irish Chain quilt for me (probably in the late 60s or early 70s). I loved the quilt and when it began to wear out I wanted another one for my bed.

This was a very traditional Irish chain -- which I now think is a bit boring.

Our tastes change over the years -- and that can definitely be a good thing.

Flutterby EQ8 Tutorial from On Point Quilter

A new EQ8 tutorial for you today.  I think you will enjoy this fun idea for a new block -- that looks much more complicated than it is.

Plus be inspired by the most recent designs from Tech Know Quilter members.

Flutterby Blocks and Quilt

Did you know that Flutterby is another name for Butterfly?  Which do you prefer?

For this project, I am using the Rooville fabric collection designed by Kimberly Einmo for Benartex.  This was a free download from Electric Quilt for November 2023.
Start by drawing a 3" block using EasyDraw.  EasyDraw is just like working with pencil ...

3D Swedish Heart Template from On Point Quilter

Picture
Swedish Heart Basket Quilt Designed by Kari using EQ8
On February 3, 2024, I shared how to draft a block and quilt that featured a Swedish Heart Basket.

The traditional Swedish Heart Basket is a three dimensional design made from two pieces of construction paper.  You may have made these during your early school days.
The tutorial had me wanting to make a few of these baskets for Valentines Day cards.

The "basket" could be filled with a favorite chocolate candy. The perfect Valentine surprise.

However the design as created in EQ was not created for three dimensional use.

So ...

Be Mine Applique Block using Electric Quilt 8 from On Point Quilter

I love blocks and quilts comprised of all types of hearts.  The design I am sharing today could be used for Valentine's Day -- or would also look super cute in a baby quilt.
The inspiration for my heart focused block was a craft file from Creative Fabrica

I found and downloaded the Love You Tons design from the Creative Fabrica website.

They provide a commercial license for their downloads -- which means I am able to use them for my EQ project tutorials.

But the beauty of redrafting is that we can make modifications to the design -- as I chose ...

Swedish Heart Baskets from On Point Quilter

Another new heart block and quilt.  This one was inspired by an email I received from Fran H. (a talented Tech Know Quilters member) on a Swedish Heart Christmas ornament.

In this weeks video tutorial, I will share how to draft an interwoven heart using the Applique toolkit in Electric Quilt 8 and a new quilt featuring this block.

EQ Mix ā€˜nā€™ Match 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

All the blocks in this project file are designed using block designs from the Electric Quilt Block Library, but with the shapes mixed and matched with each other. Challenge for you is to identify the original blocks from the library.

My favourite is the second design!

I have been playing with the block designs for quite some time, but have concentrated on the mixing and matching, and have just started adding border versions and quilting motifs. Lots of play time ahead!

Abigail Bolton Design 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Love the first design.

Would love the second one too, but I made a mistake. Can you pick it?

Thank goodness in Electric Quilt I don’t have to use a quick-un-pick to undo the mistake, but will leave this one there to remind me that I should always check before selecting designs to use as a virtual quilt.

Heartfelt Grace New Block and EQ8 Tutorial from On Point Quilter

The block for this weeks tutorial is primarily pieced and drafted in EasyDraw.  But includes some optional heart applique motifs.  I used the fabric collection Leather and Lace and Amazing Grace to color the block and quilt.

I combined the hearts with the fabric collection for the name of my new block - Heartfelt Grace.

Scroll down to see some fantastic EQ8 designs in the latest Tech Know Quilter showcase.

Mittens for Extra Electric Quilt Warmth from On Point Quilter

The last week has been a cold one.  And for those of us in the Midwest, it is another week before the planned warm-up.  The weather definitely had me looking for my best mittens.
Picture
These are made of wool and have kept my hands warm even when cross-country skiing in sub-zero temperature.

Gloves may be considered more "adult" -- but mittens are definitely warmer.  Mittens are warmer than gloves (made with the same materials) because, unlike with gloves, your fingers can share warmth. Mittens also have less total surface area for body heat to escape.
For this weeks tutorial, I started ...

Snowflake Mug Rugs from On Point Quilter

In much of the country, it is going to be much colder than normal with lots of weather warnings.  Not a lot of snow in MN this year -- but we will get the sub-zero temperatures.  And that is without wind-chill factored it.  On days like that, I love to stay inside with a good quilt to work on and some nice warm liquid to ward off the chill that seems to penetrate even the inside of the house.

I thought it was the perfect opportunity for a new mug rug to use with a favorite cup of tea.

Image Artwork Created using EQ8 from On Point Quilter

Electric Quilt has a lot of features in the Image Worktable.  Many that aren't regularly used by quilters.  Until today!

My tutorial will share a few of those tools to create works of art.

And they will all start with a block using EasyDraw with a series of slanted lines.
Seriously -- just turn off snap to grid, snap to node and turn on snap to lines and arc.  Draw lines from one edge to another.

I did every other line to create wide strips alternating with narrow strips.  But that really isn't required.

To color I used the ...

Christmas Flying Geese with Corner Pop 2 from On Point Quilter

Surrounding Angels Font Inspired Quilt from On Point Quilter

Earlier this week I was on a live call with my Tech Know Quilter Masters members.  After going through all the pre-submitted questions, we had some extra time.  So we began playing with the Winter Icons font from DaFont.com.

The group collaborated on the process of turning one letter into an applique snowman motif and then created a quilt around the motif.  They were super creative and we were all energized after working together on the project.

Deck the Halls - A New Christmas Quilt using EQ8 from On Point Quilter

Thanksgiving is over.  So it is now time to decorate for Christmas.  For me that means pulling out my Christmas quilts along with a few winter quilts.

For gift giving, I particularly enjoy creating table runners and smaller wall quilts.  I find recipients appreciate items that focused on a particular season and it is less important to "match" their "current colors" or "decorating style".  It is a great opportunity to experiment with a new fabric collection or even a new "style" of quilt.

The project today will be a fabulous gift option -- in either traditional or non-traditional Christmas fabrics?  I ...
